The Feuerstein Method

What is Human Potential?

Learn to Learn

The Feuerstein Method is a unique educational technique developed by world-renowned psychologist Reuven Feuerstein. It is a process-based approach, focusing on developing the vitally important, and often overlooked, the skill of learning how to learn, subsequently tapping into an individual’s latent intellectual capabilities.

The Feuerstein Method is based on Feuerstein’s theory of Structural Cognitive Modifiability (SCM). The theory suggests that in order to create a systemic change, the individual requires intervention via human mediation; a fundamental shift in how the learner is taught to process and interact with information across all aspects of their lives. This process is called the Mediated Learning Experience (MLE) and is implemented through two applied systems: the Learning Propensity Assessment Device (LPAD) and Instrumental Enrichment (FIE).  Together, these systems seek to assess, intervene and develop the learner’s skills.

Learning Propensity Assessment Device (LPAD)

Feuerstein’s LPAD is an extensive, dynamic assessment. Its goal is to identify which cognitive processes are weak, and need to be further developed in order to maximize an individual’s cognitive abilities. The results of the LPAD are a valuable tool in understanding the cognitive makeup of a person or a classroom and are often used to direct individual or group FIE studies.

Instrumental Enrichment (FIE)

FIE is a cognitive intervention program. Consisting of specially designed instruments, FIE is a series of pencil-and-paper tasks that may be mediated in a classroom, group, or individual setting. Each series focuses on a different cognitive skill, creating systematic, persistent, and structured conditions to engage learners in problem-solving by developing their ability to understand and elaborate information.

Who is the Feuerstein Method for?

The Feuerstein Method can benefit anyone interested in attaining new thinking and learning skills. Due to its adaptability and ease of use, the Feuerstein Method is employed in over forty countries around the world, and in a wide variety of settings. It has not only withstood the test of time, but has proven to be as useful in the classroom as it is in a clinical setting, with the aging, and as part of vocational training.
