Conceived by Professor Reuven Feuerstein and developed by Professor Roman Gouzman, Tactile IE is a learning intervention that uses touch and movement in order to enable kinesthetic and visually impaired learners to explore the world around them in an orderly and clear manner to develop their critical thinking skills.

Tactile IE for Learners with ADHD

Learners with ADHD suffer from an overload of information, which affects their ability to properly Input and Elaborate information. By forcing learners to rely only on touch and movement, Tactile IE helps train their brain to explore, structure and process information in a sequential and organized manner. By forming mental tactile images and comparing them to their existing image library, learners develop and use complex cognitive processes such as exploration, comparison, hypothetical thinking, and logical reasoning – the basis for structured and efficient learning processes.

Tactile IE for Visually Impaired Learners

Visually-impaired learners often lack the knowledge of the world as it is experienced by seeing people. When visually impaired from birth, their ability to perceptually integrate objects and concepts is impaired too.

There are very few learning tools to teach thinking and learning skills that are geared toward the visually impaired learner. By using raised images and shapes, combined with Feuerstein MLE (Mediated Learning Experience), students are given powerful tools to develop their learning skills, even when lacking vision.

Professor Roman Gouzman

Roman Gouzman leads Tactile Instrumental Enrichment at the Feuerstein Institute. Professor Gouzman holds multiple degrees in Cognitive Psychology (Ph.D.), Physics, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering (MSc) and Science Education (MA). This unique combination of expertise has melded in his extraordinary activities and international projects, which include educating several renowned Russian mathematicians, physicists, and programmers.

Professor Gouzman is a creative and gifted inventor and has pioneered methods to improve the focusing and development of mental imaging in ADHD and visually impaired learners. His work in this field led him to partner with Professor Reuven Feuerstein, adapting Feuerstein’s methodology to develop the Tactile Mediated Learning program and the Tactile Instrumental Enrichment tools under Feuerstein’s supervision.

Professor Gouzman has been awarded the European IST first prize for his groundbreaking invention of the VirTouch and holds three patents in the United States and Europe.
