Description

In this lesson you will learn how children develop language very early, utilizing processes of overhearing and imitation and that this has an important relationship to neural development. Mediated self-talk goes beyond the simple childish language that is first used in communication, adding structural and content elements that advance the child’s awareness of linguistic formats and interactional observations. The providing of language models for the child is encouraged in everyday interactions, is done as a self reflection of experience and is calibrated to reflect both normal, developmental experiences and provide elements to overcome observed language deficiencies. The remainder of the module describes the critical elements of mediated self-talk and gives examples of its structure, development, and implementation. Finally, the need to help the adult plan, produce, monitor, sustain, and modify the self-talk is emphasized.
