In this lesson, you will learn the underlying rationale for the inclusion in the FIE lesson of “bridging.” It is linked to the cognitive concept of “transfer of training” and represents an important component of the learning that takes place in the lesson. In this module we introduce a model to describe and differentiate “near” and “far” transfer. The presentation offers illustrations of what can be structurally described as lateral transfer, meaning staying close to the original concepts of the lesson and looking for meaningful associations and application; and vertical transfer, moving farther away from the learned rules/strategies as a function of encouraging generalization.
