The Institute

The Feuerstein Institute is an international educational, clinical, and research center focused on teaching people how to think, learn, and better function. These goals are achieved through the use of the Feuerstein Method, which identifies an individual’s learning aptitude, cognitive strengths, and the specific processes necessary to unlock and realize their potential.

The Methodology

The Feuerstein Method is a unique educational technique developed by world-renowned psychologist Reuven Feuerstein. Rooted in the knowledge and belief – and affirmed by the notion of neuroplasticity – that human beings are modifiable, the Feuerstein Method has the transformative ability to help anyone and everyone, regardless of age, socioeconomic status, cultural background, or disability, vastly improve their intellectual capabilities. It is a process-based approach, focused on developing the vitally important and often overlooked skill of learning how to learn, subsequently tapping into an individual’s latent intellectual capabilities.

The Approach

The Feuerstein Method is applied through two learning systems – the Learning Potential Assessment Device (LPAD) and the Instrumental Enrichment program. LPAD is an extensive, dynamic assessment. Its goal is to identify which cognitive processes are weak, and need to be developed in order to maximize the individual’s cognitive abilities. LPAD results are a valuable tool in understanding the cognitive makeup of a person or classroom and are often used to direct FIE study.

Feuerstein’s Instrumental Enrichment is a cognitive intervention program. Consisting of specially designed instruments, FIE is a series of pencil-and-paper tasks that may be mediated in a classroom, group, or individual setting. Each series focuses on a different cognitive skill, creating systematic, persistent, and structured conditions to engage learners in problem-solving by developing their ability to understand and elaborate information.

The Feuerstein Method is employed in more than 40 countries. Educational institutions employ the method as a part of their curriculum to enhance students’ thinking skills. As a therapeutic intervention tool, the method is focused to help clients overcome disabilities that prevent the learning process, in order to improve their functioning and integration. When used with the elderly, the Feuerstein Method can help to prevent cognitive deterioration and on-set dementia. In professional environments, it is used to prepare individuals to adapt to occupational demands within the workplace.
